Terms of service

Last updated on October 19, 2026.

These terms govern your use of the Checkoutlab Shopify app and the checkoutlab.nl website, supplied by Root Agency, registered in the Netherlands under Chamber of Commerce number 95339043 (“we”, “us”). Installing the app means you accept them. If you are installing on behalf of a company, you confirm you are authorised to do so.

These terms sit alongside, and never above, Shopify's own terms. Where Shopify's API Terms or Partner Program Agreement require something different from what is written here, Shopify's terms apply.

1. What the app does

Checkoutlab lets you run A/B experiments on the payment methods in your Shopify checkout, reports conversion per arm, and lets you turn a winning variant into a permanent rule. It does this by writing cart attributes from a theme app embed, applying the change with a Shopify payment customization function, and counting checkouts and orders from Shopify webhooks.

What we do not promise. We do not promise that an experiment will raise your conversion, that it will reach statistical significance, or that a result will hold in the future. The app reports what happened on your store in a given period; the decision you take on it is yours. Nothing in the app or on this website is advice about your business, your payment providers or your legal obligations.

2. What you need

  • An active Shopify store with the Online Store sales channel.
  • Shopify Plus only to hide the express checkout row. On a lower plan Shopify ignores the placement and the wallet is removed from the payment method list entirely. The app warns you; running it anyway is your choice and your result to interpret.
  • A subscription, but only to put something live. Building and previewing an experiment needs none; see fees and billing.

3. Fees, trial, billing and cancellation

  • Free to build in. Creating experiments, editing them and previewing them cost nothing and are not time-limited. A plan is required for exactly two actions: putting an experiment live, which is also what makes it start collecting results, and making a winner permanent (or switching an existing rule back on). Pausing and stopping are never gated, and results already collected stay readable without a plan.
  • The trial. The first time you successfully put an experiment live, a 7-day trial opens. During it you may run 1 experiment at a time and may not redeem a winner into a rule. The trial is a one-off per shop and does not restart.
  • Prices. €29 per month or €290 per year, excluding any VAT Shopify applies to your account. No setup fee, no usage charge, no per-order fee.
  • Who charges you. Shopify, through the Shopify Billing API, on your regular Shopify invoice. We never receive or store your payment details, and we cannot charge you outside that channel.
  • Renewal. The subscription renews automatically each period until cancelled.
  • Cancellation. Cancel from the app's settings page at any time. You keep access to the app, your data and your results, and you can still pause and stop anything that is running; what you lose is the ability to start something new or to make a winner permanent.
  • Price changes. We may change prices with at least 30 days' notice by mail to the address on your Shopify account. A change never applies to a period you have already paid for. If you do not accept it, cancel before it takes effect.
  • Refunds. We do not owe a refund simply because an experiment produced a result you did not want. If the app was genuinely unusable for a period through our fault, mail us and we will make it right.

4. Your responsibilities

  • You decide what to test. Hiding a payment method removes a way to pay for part of your shoppers, and redeeming that experiment applies it to all of them, indefinitely. Choosing the method, the market, the conditions and the duration is your call, and so is checking whether it is compatible with your agreements with your payment providers and with consumer law in the markets you sell to.
  • Preview before you start. The storefront preview shows exactly what each arm does, at no cost in visitors. Use it.
  • Rules keep running until you stop them. A redeemed rule has no end date by design. Reviewing the rules you have in place is your responsibility, not ours.
  • You are the controller of your customers' data and are responsible for your own privacy notice and, where required, consent. See the data processing terms below.
  • No misuse. Do not attempt to access another shop's data, interfere with the service, circumvent billing, or resell the app as your own.

5. Availability and changes

We aim for the app to be available continuously but do not offer a guaranteed uptime percentage. Scheduled maintenance is announced where practical. If the app is unreachable, your checkout is not affected: the variant runs inside Shopify as a function, and Shopify retries the measurement webhooks, so an outage on our side delays your results rather than losing them.

We may change or remove features. A change that removes something you rely on is announced at least 30 days in advance, and you may cancel in response.

6. Intellectual property

The app, its source code, its interface and this website are ours and stay ours. You get a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the app on the store it is installed on. Your store data, your experiments, your rules and your results are yours; we claim no ownership over them and use them only as described in the privacy policy.

Shopify, Shop Pay and the Shopify logo are trademarks of Shopify Inc. We use the names only to describe compatibility. Checkoutlab is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Shopify Inc.

7. Liability

The app is provided as is. To the extent permitted by law, we exclude implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.

Our total liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the app is limited to the fees you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose. We are not liable for lost profit, lost revenue, lost sales, loss of goodwill or indirect or consequential damage, including a drop in conversion caused by an experiment or rule you chose to apply.

Nothing here limits liability for intent, gross negligence, death or personal injury, or anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.

8. Termination

You may uninstall at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these terms materially and do not fix it within 14 days of being told, or immediately if required by Shopify or by law. On termination, every running experiment and rule stops applying and your checkout returns to normal for every visitor. Your session is deleted at once and the rest of your data on the shop erasure request Shopify sends 48 hours later, as described in the privacy policy.

9. Data processing terms

This section is the data processing agreement between us under Article 28 of the GDPR. It applies whenever we process personal data about your customers, and requires no separate signature: installing the app accepts it.

  • Roles. You are the controller; we are the processor. The categories of data and the purposes are those listed in the privacy policy: a checkout token and an order ID with the arm, the market, the device class and the order total. The data subjects are the customers of your store.
  • Instructions. We process it only to provide the app and only on your instructions, which are these terms plus how you configure the app. We will tell you if an instruction appears to breach data protection law.
  • Confidentiality. Anyone with access is bound by confidentiality. Access is limited to what is needed to run and support the service.
  • Security. The technical and organisational measures are described on Security & data processing, which forms part of this agreement.
  • Sub-processors. You authorise the sub-processors listed in the privacy policy. We will give you at least 30 days' notice before adding or replacing one that handles your data; if you reasonably object, you may cancel.
  • Transfers. All processing takes place in the European Union. We will not move it outside the EU without a lawful transfer mechanism and notice to you.
  • Data subject requests. Handled through Shopify's mandatory privacy webhooks, which the app acts on automatically, and otherwise within 30 days of your request. See how those routes work.
  • Breach notification. We will tell you without undue delay, and in any case within 48 hours of becoming aware, of a personal data breach affecting your data, with what we know and what we are doing about it.
  • Audit. On reasonable request we will provide the information needed to demonstrate compliance with this section.
  • Retention and deletion. Measurements are purged on the retention window you set in the app (400 days by default, between 30 and 1095). On termination the rest is deleted as set out in section 8, and you can trigger that erasure yourself at any time from the app's settings. We keep no copy afterwards, other than what law requires us to keep.

10. General

These terms are governed by the law of the Netherlands, and disputes go to the competent court there, unless a mandatory consumer rule gives you the right to your own courts. If a provision is unenforceable, the rest stands.

We may update these terms. The date at the top changes with it, and a material change is announced at least 30 days in advance by mail to the address on your Shopify account. Continuing to use the app after that date means the updated terms apply.
